Copyright/Fair Use Assignment
Plagiarism has been a big problem since the beginning of time. There have been many writers, inventors, journalists that have been victims of plagiarism at one time or another. So the government created a law where it is illegal for you to copy ones work, which is called the Copyright laws. But to that there are certain loop wholes that can be used which is called the Fair use act, which states that as long as you are using it for education purposes and paying homage to the original writer by citing the reference in your work, that covers you and is not stealing.
When making a movie or a song people in Hollywood like to reference things that others have done. If they repeat it just as the original or put their own twist on it, they have to pay homage to the original maker, ask for permission, and/or pay them for its use. By not this the other party is putting themselves at risk of being sued for copyright infringement. Educators can be at risk of violating the copyright laws as well by copy and pasting the work of other. Also by using music that belongs to someone else in the background of their PowerPoint or presentation. It is only ok if you give reference to the person who created it.
Educating people about the fair use act and about copyright law is very important so they won’t get caught up with law suits or maybe worse. The best way to do this by maybe showing them videos on the subject and/or examples where people have been caught up in this type situation. Also explaining how the law is here to protect everyone including them and how would they feel if they found another stole their work.
Nets stands for National Educational Technology Standards, the goal if an educator is to make sure a student is ready for life in the field of study in which him/her is studying. Giving them the knowledge to preform the skills of the profession. It helps you to find your personal creativity, how to research certain things, how to communicate and collaborate with others through networking, and last but not least being an effective critical thinker. This assignment put things in prospective for me and copying another work.
