Assistive Technology
Throughout history there have been many counts of babies being born with physical/mental disabilities, along with people who are involved in some sort of accident that may leave them maimed. For these persons all hope is not totally lost, with improvements in technology in our 21st century there are many Assistive Technology aids that can be utilized. According to the Assistive Technology Industry Association “Assistive Technology is any item, piece of equipment, software or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.” Each person’s impairment is different, some worse than others and may require more advanced Assistive Technology than another.
Assistive Technologies are great tools when educating persons with disabilities. There are many that come to mind such as high tech special purpose computers, special computer hardware, screen readers and communication software just to name a few. If someone is missing a limb with the help of prosthetics they can have full use of it again. All of these things along with others aid in assisting those with learning disabilities to receive the knowledge that is being given to them. The South Carolina Assistive Technology Program states “that assistive technology provides accommodations, modifications or adaptations made to the environment, curriculum, instruction, or assessment practices for those with disabilities and are in need of help.”
Teacher should be well trained with the various devices of assistive technology. In school they may give an in-service to the staff on the most new assistive technology that has come to surface. This is very important for the teachers to know the proper use of these

resources so that they will be able to properly use them with the students who are in need. On the financial side of things we all know nothing in this world is free, so there are many ways that assistive technology is funded. The schools systems may be given grants to aid in the funding of equipment, or if needed for an individual, social services benefits/private insurance may cover these sorts of things as well.
I have experienced these technologies being used in classrooms to assist in a classmates learning. I have also had the pleasure of working with a child with a speech issues, using computer programs and other technologies to help her learn to pronounce words properly. So I have seen firsthand what assistive technology can do for a person, improving their quality of life.
